Exhibition in conjunction with the book launch of “Tokuko Shimizu: TEXTILE POSTERS”!
The book launch of Tokuko Shimizu: TEXTILE POSTERS will be celebrated with an exhibition at the culture and art center HAGISO in Yanaka from March 29th to April 24th. A purpose built installation will present a selection of Shimizu’s original textile posters, plus brand new pieces, and a book browsing seat. It will include four new light boxes by Gottingham based on the work Untitled (Her Posters III #194 –226 ) that features in the book. The Hagiso kitchen will serve Textile Peanut in their cafe. Read more below.
Textile Peanut desert: Food featured as a theme throughout Danger Museum’s projects, as visual references and edible components in their projects. Besides Korean noodles and Polish pączek donuts, the peanut appeared as an overall metaphor for the art scene, and became the logo for their «brand logo» for the Rio porcelain series and Art of Cheese LP release (2008-10). Tokuko Shimizu’s posters for these projects, like the beautiful Super Goof poster for the Norwegian Sculpture Biennial (below) and the «floor map» design for Sparwasser HQ, will be on display at Hagiso.
In keeping with the tradition, the chefs at Hagiso are developing a special desert for their cafe, only available during the exhibition. The Textile Peanut sundae ambitiously attempts to recreate, in flavor, texture – and chewing sound – the layered makeup of Tokuko Shimizu’s pieces. Where Shimizu recreates the visual world thorough layers of beads, threads and spangles, the Textile Peanut will attempt to do a similar thing for the mouth by combining ingredients like rum jelly, peanut butter cream, gold leaf and rock salt cookie crumbles. Topped with a peanut shaped cookie. And in response, Shimizu is producing a brand new textile poster based on the desert.
